The Jim Thompson House is at 6 Soi Kasemsan 2, Rama I Road, Bangkok 10330. It is the former home and Asian art collection of James H. W. Thompson, an American architect and businessman associated with the revival and international promotion of Thai silk after the Second World War. The site is now administered through the James H. W. Thompson Foundation.
The compound is central to the story. Thompson assembled six old Thai houses and re-erected them in Bangkok in 1958–59. The buildings were adapted into a single domestic ensemble, combining traditional Thai construction with changes made for modern residential use and for the display of art. The house so functions as both architecture and collection context.
Thompson collected across Asian traditions. The foundation describes holdings that include old Thai paintings, Buddhist material, Chinese porcelain, and other art and antiquities. After Thompson disappeared in 1967, his heir donated the house and collection. The James H. W. Thompson Foundation was established in 1975, and the house and collection were registered as a national museum. The adjacent Jim Thompson Art Center extends the site's role through contemporary exhibitions, education, publications, and cultural collaboration.
The neighborhood relationship is also important. The house stands beside the Saen Saep canal, opposite Ban Krua, a long-established Cham Muslim community whose weavers were closely connected to the Thai silk enterprise. Silk production depended on local craft knowledge, labor, and urban networks.
There is a small source-control issue worth preserving in research notes: official Jim Thompson pages do not always give the same exact year for the founding of the Thai Silk Company.
The durable page is so about four linked subjects: a consciously assembled Thai domestic compound, an Asian art collection, the postwar silk economy and Ban Krua connection, and a foundation that turned a private home into a cultural institution.
