October conditions
October is a transition month, not a settled season. Across most of upper Thailand, the rainy season is starting to pull back. The north can still be green from months of rain, with cooler, drier air arriving later in the month, but tropical storms and heavy rain can still disrupt that shift.
This makes northern and central cultural travel more appealing as the month goes on. Chiang Mai and the surrounding mountains stay lush without the smoke that shows up later in the dry season. Bangkok is still wet at times, but less than during the peak of the monsoon.
The coast needs the most care. The Andaman side is improving but can still be rough in transition weeks, so don't expect December conditions on 1 October. The lower Gulf can move the other way, as the northeast monsoon starts to matter more later in the season.
Regional differences
Thailand's tourism authority (TAT) highlights the shift toward cooler weather and the return of northern mountain travel in October. The month is valuable because green scenery and improving weather overlap, not because the rain is gone.
In short: October usually marks the retreat of the rainy season in upper Thailand. The north stays green and starts cooling. The Andaman coast improves through the month. The Gulf can get wetter as the northeast monsoon builds.
