Surat Thani is more than an island-transfer label. The city, airport, railway station and Don Sak ferry piers are separate places, and a reliable connection begins by naming the one on your ticket.
Surat Thani railway station is in Phunphin, west of the city. The airport is another transfer point, while ferries for Samui and Phangan commonly use piers around Don Sak to the east. Moving between them requires road time.
A through-ticket can simplify the chain, but still check who operates each leg, where the transfer is met and what happens after a delay. A ticket ending at “Surat Thani” may not include a pier or island.
An overnight in the city is sensible when a late rail or flight arrival misses a comfortable ferry connection. The Tapi riverfront, food and nearby canal communities provide a real stop rather than a failed transit day.
For the islands, compare Samui’s broader transport and resort network, Phangan’s beaches and event calendar, and Koh Tao’s diving focus. Ferry schedules and Gulf weather should be checked close to travel.
