Before you travel
Read the hire terms before paying. Check the bike for damage with the staff, keep a record, and ask how to report a fault or crash.
Renting a scooter or motorbike needs a separate check from hiring a car. The right licence, helmet, cover, and deposit terms all matter before you ride.

Motorbike rental means renting a motorcycle for self-drive use. Thai state and legal sources mostly use the word "motorcycle. " The renter becomes the rider. This is not the same as paying for a motorcycle taxi ride.
OCPB's 2025 contract rule covers both cars and motorcycles. A small local bike rental is still a rental contract. OCPB says the standard form must name the vehicle. It must also state each side's duties, the rental term, handover, return, payment, and replacement terms.
The licence must match the vehicle type. TAT says a motorbike renter must show a valid driving licence or IDP. A DLT-sourced state page says a foreign licence used for a Thai temporary licence must be of the same type. A car-only licence does not prove a right to ride a motorcycle.
Bike safety has its own rules. TAT says both rider and passenger must wear helmets. DLT road-safety material also stresses helmets, no alcohol, speed rules, and a check of the bike's condition. DLT also notes the high crash risk linked to motorcycles.
Insurance has the same broad layers as car rental. Thailand has compulsory motor cover. A rental bike may also have other insurance or contract cover. The exact cover cannot be guessed just because the bike is for rent. TAT tells renters to check registration and insurance. It also warns that poor driving documents may affect cover.
A deposit is not insurance. It is part of the rental contract. OCPB's rules are the best place to ground deposit terms and deductions. Fixed deposit sums are not a national fact.
The main difference from car rental is the vehicle class and safety setting. The basic rental contract is similar. The rider needs motorcycle entitlement and must follow bike safety rules such as helmet use.
