Vehicles and local travel
Don Mueang Airport car rental is a self-drive ground-transport service. AOT lists "Car Rental" as its own category beside public bus, taxi, and public van. That is a more stable fact than any current counter list.
AOT also has pages for rental firms. Its Thai Rent a Car page calls the service "Self-drive car rental. " The customer takes a vehicle and drives it under a rental contract. The airport is the handover site, not the driver.
This is different from a taxi or public van. Those services carry passengers for a trip. A self-drive rental can continue after the first airport journey. The renter stays responsible for the vehicle until the rental ends.
AOT has listed several rental brands at Don Mueang. The names show that car rental is a service class shared by more than one operator. They should not be treated as a permanent list because airport counters and contracts can change.
Roads, licences, and service
Vehicle types follow the wider Thai rental market. Normal classes include small cars, sedans, SUVs, vans or people carriers, and some pickups or electric cars. Exact models are live stock, not a stable part of the choice.
National rules still apply. OCPB's 2025 controlled-contract rule covers consumer car rental. TAT says the driver needs a valid driving credential for Thailand. TAT also says renters should check roadworthiness, registration, and insurance.
Insurance keeps the same layers as elsewhere. The vehicle can have compulsory and voluntary motor cover. The rental contract can also contain a damage waiver, excess, approved-driver rules, and deposit terms. Those are not a special Don Mueang insurance system.
The stable local role is simple. Don Mueang rental lets a traveller begin or end a self-drive rental at the airport as one part of the wider airport transport system.
