Wat Suthat and the Giant Swing

Wat Suthat is a first-class royal temple in Bangkok's old city, facing the red Giant Swing at Sao Chingcha. The temple and the Brahman landmark belong to the same historic urban setting but are not the same religious institution.

A temple built across three reigns

Construction began under Rama I in 1807, continued under Rama II and was completed during Rama III's reign in 1847 or 1848. The long build explains the complex's layered Rattanakosin art and architecture.

Temple and swing, side by side

The Giant Swing was built in 1784 for a Brahman ceremony and stands in front of Wat Suthat. It is a separate ritual structure, while Wat Suthat is the Buddhist royal temple behind it. Keep that distinction clear when reading the site and follow the temple's current dress and photography rules.
