Wat Si Chum

Wat Si Chum is known for its large seated Buddha enclosed by a monumental mandapa in Sukhothai's historic landscape. The building's narrow opening changes the way the image is seen: the Buddha appears framed by the structure rather than standing in an open courtyard.

A monument within the Sukhothai park

The Fine Arts Department's virtual historical park places Wat Si Chum among Sukhothai's protected historic remains. Sukhothai, Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet were inscribed together as a UNESCO World Heritage property in 1991, so this is an archaeological setting as well as a living religious place.

What to look for

Give the mandapa time before moving on to the Buddha image. The scale of the enclosure, the framed view and the weathered historic setting are the distinctive parts of the visit. Read the park's current visitor notices for access, fees and restrictions before setting out.
