Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple

Wat Rong Suea Ten is a modern Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai known for its saturated blue-and-gold interior, large Buddha image and contemporary northern Thai art.

A local modern temple

The Tourism Authority of Thailand identifies the designer as Chiang Rai artist Phuttha Kabkaew, also known as Salan K, a disciple of Chalermchai Kositpipat. The temple's blue palette and gold details make it a distinct contemporary counterpart to Chiang Rai's White Temple.

Art, devotion and the neighbourhood

TAT's cultural material says villagers established the temple because they needed a local place for religious ceremonies. Inside, the central Buddha and murals sit within an active place of worship, so treat the building as a temple first and a photographic landmark second. Check current access arrangements before travelling.
