Wat Ratchaburana

Wat Ratchaburana is an Ayutthaya Historical Park temple centred on a tall Khmer-influenced prang. Its underground crypt and recovered objects make the site especially important for understanding royal burial and conservation.

A royal foundation

Historical accounts connect Wat Ratchaburana with King Borommarachathirat II, who is said to have built it after the deaths of his brothers in a succession struggle. Treat that account as the temple's historical tradition, while the surviving architecture provides the visible evidence.

The crypt and the finds

Fine Arts Department excavations recovered votive tablets, Buddha images and precious objects from the prang's underground chamber. The mural remains and excavation history explain why this ruin is more than a backdrop: it is also a record of how Ayutthaya's heritage has been studied and preserved.
