Wat Phra That Mae Yen

Wat Phra That Mae Yen sits on the eastern hill above Pai, about two kilometres from town. The temple combines an old chedi, Lanna-Burmese buildings, a large hillside Buddha and a wide view over the Pai valley.

A temple whose exact founding date is unknown

Pai municipal information describes Mae Yen as an old temple associated with the town but says there is no firm surviving evidence for the period when the chedi was built. That uncertainty is useful context: the site has a long local role without needing an invented founding date.

The hill is part of the visit

The bell-shaped chedi has a Burmese-style finial, while the buildings combine Lanna and Burmese forms. Visitors can drive up or climb the naga staircase of more than 300 steps to the large Buddha and viewpoint. The climb and exposed hilltop make morning or late afternoon more comfortable; keep the viewpoint secondary to the temple's worship space and check current access locally.
