Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu

Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu sits on the hill west of Mae Hong Son, above the town and its surrounding mountains. Two white chedis in Shan-Burmese forms are the temple's central landmarks.

Two chedis above the town

The Fine Arts Department records the larger chedi as built in 1860 by the merchant Chong Thong Su and his wife Nang Lek, with relics brought from Mawlamyine. The smaller chedi was built later, and both are part of the town's protected heritage.

The name Kong Mu refers to the hill's form, understood locally as resembling a chedi.

Plan the hill road

The approach leaves Highway 108 near the Phraya Singhanat Racha monument and climbs about 1.5 kilometres. The viewpoint is valuable, but this is a hilltop drive or climb rather than a flat old-town stop.
