Wat Phra That Chae Haeng

Wat Phra That Chae Haeng stands on a low hill east of Nan, across the river from the old city. Its gilded chedi, naga stairway and Lanna forms make it one of Nan's defining pilgrimage sites.

A relic site in old Nan

Nan cultural records connect the chedi with relics received from Sukhothai by Nan's ruler and describe the temple as more than 600 years old. The bell-shaped chedi is sheathed in gold-coloured metal and reflects the artistic influence of Phra That Hariphunchai.

A living annual-birth tradition

Lanna belief associates Phra That Chae Haeng with people born in the Year of the Rabbit. The annual Hok Peng pilgrimage remains a civic and religious event, with processions and ceremonies. Check the province's current festival dates before planning around it.
