Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat is a historic prang complex in the centre of Lopburi. Its Khmer-influenced architecture helps explain the city's place between mainland Southeast Asian traditions and early Ayutthaya.
The SAC Arts in Southeast Asia record finds no surviving construction document, so the date is inferred from style, structure and decoration. Its analysis places the main prang around the thirteenth century and closer to ancient Khmer forms than to later Ayutthaya prangs.
The complex was later restored during the reign of King Narai and was registered as an ancient monument in 1936. That layered history is the useful frame: the site is not one untouched building, but a record of changing political and artistic influence. Stay on marked paths around the ruins.
