Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan

Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan is Nakhon Si Thammarat's great Buddhist centre. The bell-shaped Phra Borommathat Chedi, surrounding stupas and continuing cloth-wrapping tradition connect the temple to southern Thailand's long religious history.

A regional centre shaped by exchange

UNESCO describes the monastery as a Buddhist centre with traditions reaching back more than 1,500 years. Its art and rituals reflect connections across maritime Asia, including Sri Lanka, India, Java and southern Myanmar.

A living sacred site

The main stupa is surrounded by subsidiary stupas and historic buildings, but this is not only an archaeological group. The annual cloth-wrapping ceremony and Nora traditions remain part of the site's living cultural role. Treat the relic tradition as religious belief and check current ceremony arrangements before planning a visit.
