Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai

Wat Mahathat is the principal religious complex inside Sukhothai Historical Park. Its clustered stupas, prangs, columns and Buddha images show the scale of the old capital's ceremonial centre.

The park's central monument

Wat Mahathat stands at the heart of the walled historic city and is regarded as the most important and impressive temple in Sukhothai Historical Park. The complex reflects the early Thai architectural vocabulary associated with the Sukhothai kingdom.

Why the wider setting matters

The Fine Arts Department manages the archaeological park as a protected cultural landscape, not as one isolated building. Read the temple with the old city, reservoirs, roads and neighbouring monuments around it. Keep to marked paths and do not climb the historic structures.
