Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo

Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo is the multi-stupa complex opposite Wat Chang Lom in Si Satchanalai Historical Park. Its name means “temple of seven rows of chedis,” a useful cue to what makes the site distinctive.

A landscape of different chedis

The Fine Arts Department guide identifies a lotus-bud main chedi, a vihara and 33 smaller chedis within boundary walls and a surrounding ditch. The smaller towers show several artistic influences, including Sri Lankan, Pagan and Srivijaya forms.

A proposal that it held royal cremation remains is attributed to Prince Damrongrajanuphap in the guide. It is an interpretation, not an established function for every monument in the complex.

Look beyond the main tower

Take the time to compare the subordinate chedis rather than stopping at the central tower. Fine Arts records place the complex within the protected old city of Si Satchanalai, part of the World Heritage property shared with Sukhothai and Kamphaeng Phet.
