Wat Chang Lom

Wat Chang Lom is one of the defining monuments inside Si Satchanalai Historical Park. Its bell-shaped chedi appears to rest on a ring of standing elephants, giving the ruin a very different silhouette from the nearby lotus-bud towers.

Elephants around a Sri Lankan-style chedi

A Fine Arts Department guide describes the elephant sculptures as taller than life size and unlike those at other Thai temples. The department links the chedi form to Sri Lankan precedents and records both memorial and cosmological readings of the elephants.

Those interpretations explain the visual programme; they do not settle an exact founding date. The Anthropology Centre likewise notes that written evidence for construction is unclear.

See it as part of the old city

Wat Chang Lom sits within the walled historical area, opposite Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo. The Fine Arts Department lists both among the park's preserved sites, so give each its own time rather than treating them as interchangeable ruins.
