Suan Mokkh and Wat Than Nam Lai

Suan Mokkhaphalaram is a forest monastery and meditation centre in Chaiya, Surat Thani. It is also known as Wat Than Nam Lai, the Temple of Flowing Water, and is closely associated with the Buddhist teacher Buddhadasa Bhikkhu.

From a 1932 retreat to a larger forest monastery

Buddhadasa Bhikkhu established Suan Mokkh near Phumriang in 1932 as a place for studying and practising the Dhamma. As the community grew, it moved to the Wat Than Nam Lai site near Chaiya in the early 1940s. The present monastery is therefore both a living temple and a record of a modern Thai Buddhist teaching movement.

A place for practice, not a monument checklist

The grounds use forest, rock, paths, images, poetry and teaching spaces to encourage attention and reflection. The Spiritual Theatre is one of the better-known learning spaces, presenting Buddhist ideas through visual art and text. Visit quietly, follow any meditation-centre rules and check current arrangements before planning around retreats or museum access.
