Prasat Muang Tam

Prasat Muang Tam is an 11th-century Khmer Hindu sanctuary southeast of Phanom Rung in Buriram. Five brick towers and four water courts make its plan easy to distinguish from a modern Thai Buddhist temple.

A Shaivite sanctuary

The Fine Arts Department identifies Muang Tam as a Hindu sanctuary dedicated to Shiva and dates it to the latter half of the 11th century. The central group originally had five brick towers on one base, accompanied by two library buildings.

Ponds, gallery and outer wall

A gallery encloses the inner sanctuary. Four L-shaped ponds sit between it and the laterite outer wall. The name Muang Tam, meaning lower city, is probably a later reference to the site's lowland position below Phanom Rung; no surviving inscription gives the sanctuary's original name.

Pairing both sites makes historical sense, but check their separate entrances, travel time and current Fine Arts Department notices.
