Phanom Rung Historical Park

Prasat Phanom Rung is a Khmer sanctuary on Phanom Rung Mountain in Buriram. Its long raised approach, aligned buildings and hilltop position make the route itself part of the architecture.

A Shaivite sanctuary on a mountain

The Fine Arts Department's historical account identifies Phanom Rung as a Hindu sanctuary associated with Shaivism and the worship of Shiva. Inscriptions and surviving structures show that the complex grew over time and served as a religious centre with land and communities attached to it.

Read the approach as a planned axis

The sanctuary is arranged on a straight axis toward the main prasat, with gateways, terraces and rising ground drawing visitors toward the shrine. The site was registered as a national historic monument in 1935, reconstructed using anastylosis from 1971 and opened as a historical park in 1988. Check the Fine Arts Department's current hours and access rules before travelling to the hilltop.
