Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Chanthaburi's Roman Catholic cathedral stands beside the Chanthaburi River, opposite the old waterfront community. Its twin spires and stained glass make it a different kind of sacred stop from the province's Buddhist temples.

The fifth church on this site

Thailand's cultural-environment register says the present cathedral is the fifth church built here. It was consecrated on 10 January 1906 and serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chanthaburi.

The Gothic-influenced building has twin towers, pointed forms and stained-glass windows. A conservation programme later received an architectural conservation award in 1999.

What to look for

Inside, the image of the Virgin Mary is decorated with gems, reflecting Chanthaburi's long connection with the gem trade. This remains an active church, so check service times and give worshippers space rather than treating the nave only as a photo stop.
