May conditions
May is one of Thailand's true transition months. TMD normally places the start of the rainy season around mid-May, although the exact onset varies. The month so contains both late hot-season conditions and the first broader establishment of the southwest monsoon.
That transition changes the landscape quickly. TAT's May material emphasizes ecological and cultural travel as rain begins to return. Northern and central vegetation greens, heat can be broken by storms, and the atmosphere begins moving away from the driest part of the year. In the north, this transition can also help reduce the smoke burden that peaks earlier in the dry season, though air-quality improvement is not instantaneous or uniform.
The Andaman coast is moving into its less reliable period. Phuket and Krabi remain functioning destinations, but a trip whose entire value depends on daily small-boat departures has more weather exposure than it did in February or March. The Gulf side begins to look more seasonally distinct, with Samui-area islands often entering a comparatively useful period.
Regional differences
Bangkok and central cultural destinations remain strong because their cultural value is not dependent on calm sea or mountain views. The shift into rain can make heat more humid, and short intense storms can affect traffic and drainage, but the city remains a city rather than a weather product.
May should be presented as the month when Thailand changes system: hot season gives way to monsoon, the west coast becomes less predictable, and green-season travel begins.
