Gold in Thailand
Thai gold shops quote bars and jewellery in baht-weight, while the national reference separates buying and selling prices. Read the product, purity, weight and shop charge together before comparing two offers.
The association price and the shop offer
The Gold Traders Association publishes separate buy and sell prices for gold bars and ornaments. Its page may change several times in one day, so note the announcement time as well as the number.
A retail offer can differ because a shop adds workmanship, transport or other costs. The association itself warns that its jewellery calculation is an estimate rather than a guaranteed transaction price. Ask the shop to separate the gold value, workmanship and any deduction on resale.
Purity, labels and receipts
The association describes 96.5% as the usual Thai jewellery standard. Do not assume that every item uses the same purity or that “baht” means currency: on a gold counter it can describe weight.
Use an established shop, inspect the label and keep a receipt that identifies the item, purity, weight and price components. Compare the shop’s displayed buy-back terms before paying, especially when buying jewellery rather than a bar.
